Asking for leadership

UKSSD sent letters to the M8 & core cities Mayors in advance of their first meeting on the 23 October. In the letters we asked them to show the leadership needed to deliver the SDGs across the UK and highlighted how the Goals help us to address local challenges.

‘Cities and regions have the power – and the opportunity – to lead the charge on the SDGs in the UK by tackling challenges in innovative and collaborative ways’.

The letter was produced by Partners who discussed the idea at our workshop in September.

We also joined forces with UN Global Compact and Bond to issue a letter to David Lidington MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office. The letter raised our concerns about the lack of clarity on how stakeholders will be engaged in the UK’s Voluntary National Review (VNR) to the UN next year, beyond the online portal they launched earlier in the month.

We’re finalising our strategy and programmes after the Partner event in September and will share more detail soon.

Opinion

With the Environmental Audit Enquiry evidence session on Goal 2, the EU’s ban on single-use plastics and the new Agriculture and Fisheries Bills all in the news this month we thought it would be timely to re-share some of our blogs from Measuring up authors:

We need to rethink our food system to stand a chance of ending hunger in the UK

As the UK prepares to leave the EU, Dr Courtney Scott from the Food Foundation explains why a new agricultural policy will be essential if we want to end hunger and achieve SDG2 in the UK. Read her blog.

Our blue backyard, why the UK needs to do more for our ocean health

Our oceans have been fundamentally changed by human activity and the UK must go further if it’s going to achieve Goal 14. Alec Taylor of WWF UK has reason to hope a transformation is not too far away. Read his blog.

2020, an opportunity for nature and sustainable development

Several of the SDG targets on life on land under Goal 15 need to be achieved by 2020. As we move towards this deadline, Georgina Chandler from RSPB explains why UK leadership is critical to protect and restore life on land in the UK and internationally. Read her blog.
